Marketing beyond third-party cookies
When I first wrote about a cookieless future, Chrome was planning to remove third-party cookies. Google later changed course: in April 2025 it confirmed it would maintain its existing approach to third-party cookie choice. There is no single deadline when all marketing becomes cookieless. The more useful question is how much of your relationship with customers depends on tracking you do not control.
If you're one of my existing clients, you're likely familiar with the concept of a “cookieless future”, as I've been discussing it for several months. The landscape of digital marketing is undergoing a significant transformation. As a marketer, part of my responsibility is guiding business owners through the challenges of relying on third-party tracking. I thought I'd share eight practical strategies to help your business not only survive these challenges, but thrive in this changing environment.
What is a cookieless future?
A cookieless future refers to the digital environment where the use of third-party cookies for tracking user behaviour and collecting data is limited or eliminated. Where that tracking is restricted, businesses and marketers will face challenges related to tracking and targeting users across websites and platforms. The shift to a cookieless future is driven by privacy concerns, increased regulatory scrutiny and changes implemented by major web browsers and operating systems. As a result, marketing strategies and digital advertising methods need to adapt to rely less on traditional cookie-based tracking mechanisms, prompting a reevaluation of how user data is collected, stored and utilised for personalised online experiences.
Embrace the power of email marketing
Email marketing is a cornerstone in the cookieless era. With inboxes becoming a safe haven for direct communication, businesses can foster relationships, gather valuable first-party data and deliver personalised content. Encourage your audience to subscribe and willingly share information for a win-win relationship.
Harness the potential of IRL (in-real-life) events
Physical interactions are more valuable than ever. IRL events not only provide opportunities for face-to-face connections but also allow you to collect first-party data directly from engaged attendees. Bridge the gap between offline and online experiences for a seamless customer journey.
Dive into the world of podcasts
Podcasts are an intimate and powerful medium to connect with your audience. Businesses can create engaging and informative content that resonates with listeners. Consider hosting your own podcast or collaborating with existing ones to amplify your brand voice.
Redefine engagement on social media
While social media remains a key channel, the focus shifts from third-party data to cultivating an engaged community. Invest in meaningful interactions, user-generated content and authentic storytelling. Platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn can be powerful tools in your cookieless arsenal.
Invest in a content-rich website
Your website becomes the epicentre of your online presence. Invest in creating valuable, SEO-friendly content that attracts organic traffic. With users actively seeking information, a content-rich website can serve as a hub for engagement and lead generation.
Explore appropriate influencer collaborations
In a cookieless world, influencers become even more valuable. Partner with influencers whose audience aligns with your target market. Their authentic endorsements can reach your audience organically without relying on traditional cookie-based targeting.
Connect offline and online experiences
QR codes bridge the gap between offline and online experiences. Incorporate them into your print materials, IRL events, or even product packaging. This integration ensures a seamless transition and encourages user interaction without relying on cookies.
Focus on first-party data collection
Make it a priority to gather and utilise first-party data. Encourage users to share information through loyalty programmes, surveys or interactive content. The data collected becomes invaluable in crafting personalised experiences and targeted campaigns.
In the midst of a transformative shift in the digital realm, businesses poised for adaptation and innovation are primed for success. Embracing a cookieless future presents a unique opportunity to forge robust and authentic connections with your audience. While the path ahead may pose challenges, strategic adaptation can empower your business to embark on a journey toward enduring success.
The channel is only part of the decision. What matters is why someone would choose to engage, what they find useful and whether the experience supports the relationship you want to build. Collecting information directly also calls for care about what people understand and agree to; “first-party” is not a substitute for responsible use.
